(Jersey Shore)
The Jersey shore is a great place for your dog - as long as you come when the weather’s not so hot and no one wants to be there. But there is good news at hand. In the Brant Beach section of Long Beach Township, officials have created what they say is the first dawn-to-dusk "dog beach" at the Jersey Shore (full article). That’s every day of the year, including summer.
That’s great news for vacationing dog owners at the Jersey shore. The new dog beach doesn’t make everyone happy and even though dog owners are still in the minority compared to non-dog owners, but it demonstrates the growing power of dog people to influence public policy. Witness the political force the dog lobby is brandishing in San Francisco.
But if you still don’t want to deal with angry surfer dudes protesting your dog’s right to use the beach the best places for your dog this summer at the Jersey Shore are Island Beach State Park.
Henry Phipps, compatriot with Andrew Carnegie in U.S. Steel, purchased Island Beach, a ten-mile, undeveloped barrier island smack in the middle of the Jersey coastline in 1926 with visions of a grand shore resort. But the stock market crash halted his assault on these natural dunes after erecting only a handful of rambling houses. The Phipps estate sold the property to New Jersey in 1953 and the park opened to the public in 1959.
There are a series of short nature trails (less than one mile) as you drive down the main park road to its end at Barnegat Inlet but once your dog gets that whiff of salt air in her nose, she may not be in any mood to tarry. Get to the beach! From the last parking lot to the southern tip of the island is a hike of over one mile on the piles of white sand. Parking is limited, however, and if you don’t arrive early enough in the summer you will be shut out.
