Pet First Aid
Watching our dogs run along a trail, so athletic, so graceful, racing along and bounding over fallen logs, it is easy to be lulled into the fallacy that they are invulnerable. But injuries happen. The American Red Cross offers courses to train you in Pet First Aid. Learn how to keep your dog safe and act with confidence until help from a veterinarian can be obtained should your dog sustain an injury or become suddenly ill.
Learn to recognize the signals of an emergency in your pet. Learn how to care for choking, bleeding, broken bones, heat and cold related emergencies and how to safely approach, and move, an injured pet. Learn to recognize breathing related emergencies and practice CPR and other skills on a realistic, life-size, pet mannequin. Depending on your local chapter you will learn how to deal with snake bites. Class fees typically include a Pet First Aid kit and a book.
Classes are held throughout the year but winter is the perfect time to set yourself up for a four-hour indoor session. To find a course schedule from your local chpater, check out the American Red Cross website: click
