As you know, our national park system is not a particularly dog-friendly organization with dogs banned on the trails of just about every national park. But as we have pointed out in the past for some reason our national historic sites are welcoming places to hike with our dogs. The Federal Government provides a vast wealth of free information and one of our favorites comes from the National Park Service who have designed actual travel itineraries that highlight thousands of sites that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places—bringing them to the attention of anyone interested in learning more about American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture and encouraging people to visit and enjoy these important and inspiring places. Many of the travel itineraries lead the adventurous spirit to little-publicized destinations such as the excellent Three Nevada Towns or the Delaware-Lehigh Corridor. Of course these itineraries take no account of dog-friendliness but there are plenty to choose from and many, like the two aforementioned, feature many sites that welcome dogs. You can give it a look at: http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/index.htm.
