The Roof Of Oklahoma


Black Mesa in the far northwest tip of the Oklahoma Panhandle got its name from the layer of black lava rock that coated the region about 30 million years ago. Quick Tip
Ask For A Trail Map


When visiting a new park, get in the habit of requesting a “trail map” from the ranger station. Not a “park map” or simply a “map.” Most small parks will only have one map available that doesn’t differentiate but large parks may have several types of maps. Since most people in these popular multi-use parks usually aren’t coming to hike the maps put out on the counter are general park maps and rangers won’t assume you are looking to hike if you just ask for a “park map.”
