You don't always have to go to the mountains
to find waterfalls that will set your dog's tail to wagging.
In Ohio, for instance, not generally known for dispensing nosebleeds.
When glacial ice plugged the Hocking River the underlying sandstone
cracked and eroded into fascinating rock formations and caves.
The state of Ohio began preserving this unique natural area in
1924 with a purchase of 146 acres and today Hocking Hills is
a superb destination for any dog (http://www.ohiodnr.com/parks/parks/hocking.htm).
There are six distinct areas in the park - five for canine hiking:
no dogs are permitted in the Conkles Hollow state nature preserve
in the center of Hocking Hills.
The star of Hocking Hills is Old Man's Cave tucked into a heavily
wooded, twisting ravine. Your dog will enjoy a dip in Old Man's
Creek, especially in the pool beneath the Upper Falls. There
is more canine aquatics nearby in the pools under the more powerful
Cedar Falls. Down the road you will find Ash Cave and a steady
drip of water that spills about four stories over a sheer cliff.
Both can be accessed by car and a short walk from the parking
lots. For heartier visitors, a 6-mile trail connects all three
natural attractions.
