Hanging Out Car Windows The iconic image of a happy dog is the one with Rover hanging his head out a car window, his entire face lit up with excitement. Why do dogs hang their heads out of the windows of moving cars? No one knows for sure. Some surmise that there are so many smells carried in the rushing air that your dog can't resist sticking her nose in the stream to find out what is going on. But have you ever hung your arm out the window while driving and got hit by a bug? Imagine that impact in your eye and you know why it is not a good idea to leave the windows down for your dog, especially on the highway.
