Don't Go
To Greeley, Colorado
The quick tip for this month is: Don't go to Greeley, Colorado.
The plains town was renamed for the 19th Century New York
Tribune newspaper editor who popularized the phrase, "Go
West, young man." Apparently that advice was edited from
the entire sentence that read, "Go West, young man - but
don't take your dog with you." We received this email the
other day:
Hi there,
I really like your website! However, I was wondering along
with the recommendations of where to take your dog, you could
include places where NOT to take your dog? For example,
we just moved to Greeley from Colorado Springs, CO. with
our two golden retrievers, Lucky and Dakota. When we lived
in Colorado Springs there were lots of great places to take our
dogs off-leash, however, now that we've lived in Greeley for
a few months we've discovered that this is the most dog UNFRIENDLY
place in America! Dogs are not allowed anywhere here, not
even in the local parks and on trails, and there is only one
dog park that leaves a LOT to be desired!
I wish there was a "warning" website for dog lovers
like me --we would have thought twice before moving to Greeley
had we known the laws against dogs were so strict here.
Anyway, I have earmarked your site for future reference and have
found it very helpful. I just wish I didn't have to drive
40 minutes just to walk my dogs! : (
Thanks,
Rose
Greeley, which was founded as a utopian
community, is clearly no utopia for dogs. Although we try to
steer dog lovers to the best places for dogs we will add a page
for "bad dog experiences" as well to save people a
trip and maybe work as an agent for change. If you have a place
to warn dog lovers about, let us know and we'll add it here:
No Dogs!
