Doggin'
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison
As the National Park Service likes to
say, "No other canyon in North America combines the narrow
opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black
Canyon of the Gunnison." The Colorado gorge is conveniently
located on the great Route 50 that cuts across the entire country
from Ocean City, Maryland to San Francisco. Yet it receives fewer
than 200,000 visitors a year - that's like a slow summer week
in Yellowstone.
Your dog won't be able to hike in Black Canyon but there is godd
stuff here anyway. Your dogs can hike on all the short nature
trails and overlooks on the south rim, collecting views of the
uplifted hard rock that is being gouged by a river dropping an
average of 96 feet per mile in the park. Your dog can also trot
along the Rim Trail that hugs the canyon rim for over
one mile. If you make it around to the north rim you can visit
the short Chasm View Nature Trail in the narrowest section
of the canyon. Much of this hiking is in light woods and open
brush so keep drinking water handy even in the summer on these
short rambles.
