Doggin' Rhode Island: Best of the Best

As the temperatures drop, you may notice your dog getting friskier. Autumn is the best time of year to get out and exercise with your dog on Rhode Island trails. Rhode Island is a great place to hike with your dog. Within a short drive your dog can climb hills that leave him panting, trot down sand trails, walk on some of the most historic grounds in America or circle lakes for miles and never lose sight of the water.

BEST PLACE FOR YOUR DOG TO SWIM: Fort Wetherill State Park. The best canine swimming in Rhode Island is available in the cove below the middle parking lot.

BEST ONE-HOUR WORKOUT FOR YOUR DOG: Diamond Hill Park. If you are looking for the steepest canine hike in Rhode Island - you've found it! Your dog's four-wheel drive will be a definite asset on the old hike-up-and-ski hill.

PRETTIEST HIKE FOR YOUR DOG: Cliff Walk. Even Dog Poop bags are available for America's most spectacular backyard walk.

BEST BEACH TO HIKE WITH YOUR DOG: Mohegan Bluffs. On Block Island, along Mohegan Trail/Spring Street, you can descend a flight of wooden stairs to the beach at the foot of the spectacular Mohegan bluffs from Payne Overlook.

BEST HALF-HOUR HIKE WITH YOUR DOG: Heritage Park. The perimeter trail is a wide and wonderful canine hike on wood chips that rolls past rock outcroppings and across streams.

MOST HISTORIC HIKE WITH YOUR DOG: Fort Barton Nature Walk. Behind the grassy redoubt of Fort Barton a flight of steep wooden steps drop down into 80 acres of lush woodlands. Here are some three miles of sporty canine hiking that explore ravines and streambeds.

BEST OPEN-FIELD HIKING WITH YOUR DOG: Rodman Hollow. There are about 12 miles of footpaths crisscrossing the southern half of Block Island in the tradition of walking the English countryside.

BEST PLACE TO CIRCLE A LAKE WITH YOUR DOG: Burlingame State Park. The star walk at Burlingame is the 7.9-mile Vin Gormley Trail that circumnavigates the pond. Once you are in for a penny on this canine hike you are in for a pound since the only shortcut available is by boat, unless you choose to retrace your steps.

BEST PLACE TO LOSE YOURSELF IN THE WOODS WITH YOUR DOG: Arcadia Management Area. The sheer variety and quality of these shady trails conspire to make Arcadia the best place in Rhode Island for a day of hiking with your dog. There are 30 miles of trails in all.
