St. Andrews State Park (east of Panama
City, Florida off Highway 392) has spent its share of time atop
lists of America's best beaches. Of course your dog won't be
allowed on such a popular swimming beach but if you ignore the
sugary white sands of the Gulf of Mexico your dog can still have
a super time at St. Andrews.
When you pull into the park, turn left
when everyone else goes straight for the beach parking lot. Your
destination is the mostly ignored Grand Lagoon side of the park
where you and your dog can enjoy a narrow strip of sand and leisurely
swimming in the shallow, gentle waters. The Grand Lagoon is reached
by the Heron Pond Trail, a rolling exploration of the
scrubby dunes.
If you want to see how the non-dog set
is living you can hike with your dog on the Gator Lake Trail,
a surprisingly quiet half-mile trail through a waste area on
the other side of the dunes from the famous St. Andrews beach.
