Nestled between Pismo Beach and Oceano
Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is the only California
State Park where vehicles may be driven on the beach. Even passenger
cars can easily drive on the northern portion of the beach. And
if you find a beach that allows driving that usually means one
thing for dog owners - dogs are allowed on the beach.
Of course, don't expect a quiet stroll
along the waves when you bring your dog to Grover Beach. You'll
likely be dodging vehicles from all over the United States that
come to joy ride on 5.5 miles of sand and dunes. Horses are allowed
too. And camping. And bonfires.
But there is a place to get away from
all the traffic. For canine hikers, the attraction is Oceano
Dunes Preserve, a region of tall sand hills where vehicles are
prohibited, and you can wander for miles. Often referred to as
the Nipomo Dunes these days, they extend 18 miles from the northern
end of Oceano Dunes to Pt. Sal State Beach.
