The Basilica of Mission San Carlos Borromeo
del Rio Carmel was the second mission built in California, founded
in Monterey in 1770 and moved to its present location by Spanish
missionaries a year later. Artists discovered the village in
the early 1900s and strict zoning ordinances keep Carmel, only
one mile square, a town of eclectic cottages and bungalows. Luckily,
those strict laws don't extend to dogs and Carmel-by-the-Sea
is one of the most dog-friendly towns around.
You will enjoy the quirky architecture
walking your dog through town but he will be chomping at the
leash to get to Carmel Beach City Park at the end of Ocean Avenue.
Here your dog can run unleashed on soft white sand. This is the
biggest beach among the craggy headlands of Monterey Peninsula.
To your right will be the world-famous 18th hole of the Pebble
Beach Golf Links and to your left dramatic cliffs. Straight ahead
will be mesmerizing views of Monterey Bay. Dogs are also welcome
on Carmel River State Beach at the east end of town.
